We actually can start off with the second question first. Why would you care?
Have you ever been frustrated by the obstacles that seem to arise from time to time in life? Do you find yourself making excuses for your lack of results? You know how it is… Sales are down because of the economy… I don’t have time to spend with my family because of all the things that I have to do at work… I’m out of shape because I don’t have time to exercise. Do you find yourself being misunderstood or lacking in motivation? Do you find that a part of you is all charged up and ready to go and another part bored to death and could care less?
The techniques of NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming are the most sophisticated and effective methodologies currently available to teach you how to get the results you want. NLP is devoted to learning how to think more effectively and to communicate more effectively with yourself and others. It is a very specific set of methodologies and techniques for re-mapping your internal representations, values, beliefs, strategies, negative emotions and limiting decisions so that you change your thinking, actions and results.
Neuro is about our neurological system. We experience our world through our senses and we translate that sensory input into thought processes at both the conscious and unconscious levels affecting our physiology, emotions and behaviors.
Linguistic is the language we use to make sense of the world and to communicate our experiences to others.
Programming is about how we code or mentally represent our experiences. It is our internal processes and thinking patterns that are used to make decisions, solve problems, learn, evaluate and get results.
What is NLP?
- The science and art of communication
- The key to learning
- It is about what make you and others “tick”
- It is how to get the results you want, in all areas of your life
- A manual for your brain
- A way to create your own future
- A toolkit for personal and organizational change
NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder who studied people that were considered to be master communicators and agents of change. Bandler and Grinder looked at linguistics, gestalt therapy, hypnosis, family therapy, behavioral psychology, meta programs and language patterns. They modeled Dr. Milton Erickson who achieved phenomenal success with therapeutic hypnosis, Dr. Virginia Satir, developer of Conjoint Family Therapy, and Fritz Perls, founder of Gestalt Psychology. The result is a series of techniques that can be applied and are based upon rapport (our relationship with others), sensory awareness (using all of our five senses purposefully), outcome thinking (thinking about what you want rather than what you don’t want) and behavioral flexibility (being willing to change how you function in order to get different results).
So, the question becomes… If I want results instead of reasons, how could I not learn more about the techniques of NLP?
